Description:
In 2021, a series of workshops led by UICC in collaboration with the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) brought together leaders of UICC members in Europe to discuss common challenges, lessons and collaborative opportunities in the region. As a result of the discussions and opportunities identified, UICC, KWF and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) agreed to further convene key stakeholders in the region to explore and scope out an initiative to “Reimagine Cancer Research in Europe”.
Subsequently in 2022, through a series of in-depth key informant interviews and three virtual workshops involving European cancer organisations, it was agreed that, in line with Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and Mission on Cancer, there is a need for targeted support and investment for research into novel strategies in cancer prevention and their implementation.
A group of founding European cancer organisations have pledged to support joint activities including a call for proposals for collaborative European research grants administered by UICC, whereby seed-funding for the scale-up of innovative cancer prevention research projects and their implementation is provided. The current session will present the proposed initiative, allow for discussion, and the signing of MOUs between UICC and the founding organisations will take place.
