Description:
Globally, we are experiencing a ‘longevity revolution’ in which the proportion of the world’s population over the age of 65 is increasing rapidly. These changes will reshape social, political, and economic landscapes and will have an impact the cancer burden in every country as more than 50% of cancer cases already occur in adults over the age of 65. Alongside a growing burden of cancer there is an increasing body of evidence documenting the inequities experienced by older adults at all points of a patient’s journey, and the impacts this is having on individuals, families, communities and health systems. The causes of these inequalities are diverse; however, many of these inequalities are preventable and can be addressed through policy and programme changes.
Over the course of this roundtable discussion, participants will be invited to share their perspectives on how the cancer community can better identify, monitor and advocate to address inequities being faced by older adults with cancer, drawing on ongoing and upcoming initiatives, such as the EU Cancer Inequalities Registry and other similar projects.
